Three squash teams take maximum points
Three teams, including both Sumner combinations, took maximum points when the new men’s open grade inter-club squash competition began at the Christchurch club’s courts last evening. Blackwells High School Old Boys, the other team to achieve a clean sweep, did so in spite of having to make a late change to its line-up. John Tolchard had to make an urgent business trip to the United States and his replacement, Scott Mitchell, formerly of Napier, stepped into the breach admirably with a fourgame win over Marist’s Barry Gardiner. Mitchell played some neat drop shots. Steven Wren (Sumner II) looked very sharp in his straight games win over another top young player, Mark Crosbie (Norwich Union Burnside). The first game was very closely contested, but Wren took only 15min to win the next two. Linwood and Donnell Jewellers Christchurch were expected to have a very close contest, but the edge was taken out of it when the veteran left-hander, Barry Taylor (Christchurch), had to default his match with a back injury after only a handful of rallies. The upset of the night came in the women’s open competition when the Canterbury No. 1, Carolyn Viggers, lost in five ’ames to Linwood’s Freda Walker at the Sumner club courts.
Rocked by that reversal,
