Seafield Celeste Auckland prospect

Special correspondent Auckland Seafield Celeste looks to have a great chance of completing a hat-trick when she contests the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Rowe Cup meeting at Alexandra Park this evening. She originally was to have started from a second row barrier position but an unusually large number of scratchings, seven, has enabled her to move up into the front row, at No. 7. It is still fairly wide at the mile post but most of those drawn inside Seafield Celeste are out of form. The Manurewa four-year-old has won her last two races, one of them a flying mile, after showing brilliant acceleration early. Only Merlin Neptune is likely to tackle her for the role of pacemaker in the National Bloodstock Free-for-all. Merlin Neptune has been improving steadily since he resumed racing and, at his latest appearance, he finished a good third in a flying mile at Alexandra Park on April 26. He has drawn one place better than Seafield Celeste. Adios Trick, a good Christchurch three-year-old filly, is bound to retain a good following in spite of not paying a dividend in either of her last two races. She did not go badly when fifth in the C. F. McCarthy Ladyship Stakes on the first night of the Rowe Cup meeting and, at No. 3, is ideally drawn. Undercheck, fourth last Saturday, and Dunstan Boy, a last-start winner at Alexandra Park on April 19, must also be strongly considered. A sizeable number of hopefuls seeking selection in the Max Harvey-sponsored Rowe Cup on Saturday night will compete in the second leg-, the Meadowset Graphics Trot. Dragon’s Pride, Landora’s Pride, Tussle and Indette, the leading contenders for Rowe Cup honours, are giving the race a miss and the issue is decidedly open. Captain Carthew, trained and driven by Peter Wolfenden, makes a good deal of appeal. Having only his second race of the season, he did not show up at Alexandra Park on April 19 last time out but he was on a hard mark and the distance, 2200 m, did not really suit him. Since then, Captain Carthew has run second to Dragon’s Pride at a matinee meeting at Pukekohe. He showed splendid form last season and should be just about ready for a bold run. The distance of 2700 m will be to his liking. Empire Lobell, By the Way, Simon Katz and Mister Square look his main rivals. Empire Lobell, after two successive wins, was not disgraced when sixth in his debut in the best class on the first night of the meeting. He was forced to race wide over most of the last round. By the Way did well to finish fifth in the same race after having had anything but a good run.
