Man designs women’s logo
PA Wellington Three men have won the top prizes in a competition to design a logo for the Ministry of Women's Affairs.
A Wellington graphic designer, Mr Michael Rolfe, formerly of Rangiora, won first prize with a stylised design of the Ministry’s initials, MWA. Mr J. Denton, of Christchurch, and Mr Garry Meeson, of Auckland, won award prizes. Mr Rolfe said that he was just beginning freelance work and hoped the design would make a good impression. The 51000 prize would help in setting up his business.
He said he had wanted to emphasise cultural elements and the logo had an allusion to weaving. Mr Rolfe, who is 21, learnt graphic design at Christchurch Polytechnic and took a photography course at Wellington Polytechnic before deciding to freelance. The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Ann Hercus, said she was delighted with the more than 200 entries in the competition. “The only minor complaint I have is that you are not a woman,” she jokingly told Mr Rolfe.
