The Business International Ranking, with the cost of staying in New York set at 100, gave Lagos 146 points, ahead of Tokyo with 118 and Teheran, with 116. It was the fourth year running that Lagos was at the top of the list.
Cairo came next with 114 points, followed by Chicago with 102 and San Francisco with 101.
The most expensive city in Europe for the international businessman was Oslo, with 87 points; with the Swiss cities of Zurich and Geneva scoring 75 and 74 respectively. The cheapest in Europe, with 53 points, was the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Singapore emerged as the dearest city in Asia, scoring 95 points, and Mexico City came top of the league in Latin America, with 65.
The study, which covers the cost of food, clothing, entertainment and transport but not rents, was based on prices monitored in one week in January.
