Pranks pay up

PA Auckland University students involved in a cyanide hoax in Auckland on Monday have apologised to the authorities and paid compensation. Five students who left drums labelled “cyanide” in Queen Street voluntarily admitted their part to the police yesterday. A sixth student involved in the stunt, which brought central Auckland to a standstill, has left on a university field trip. The police said they would wait to question him when he returned on Monday before deciding whether to lay charges against the six. The students visited and apologised to the Fire Service, the St John Ambulance Association, and a chelation therapy clinic which had to move about 20 elderly patients during the scare. The police said the students paid about $1250 compensation to the three groups.
