Obituary Captain J. Forbes
PA Auckland Captain James Forbes, a New Zealander who guided the 72 ships of the United States invasion fleet to the Tarawa beaches in World War II has died in Auckland. He was 83. Captain Forbes was one of New Zealand’s best known salvage experts and a member of the Auckland Harbour Board from 1962 to 1977. He was deputy chairman from 1971 until his retirement.
Captain Forbes began a distinguished maritime career as a Merchant Navy officer and acquired a detailed knowledge of the western Pacific islands
while working with the British High Commission. The United States Navy called during World War II on his experience and after training at Pearl Harbour he piloted the first minesweeper into Tarawa lagoon, in the Gilbert Islands, which are now the Republic of Kiribati. In the next week,' he piloted destroyers, transports, and landing ships to the island under enemy fire. He was awarded a United States Bronze Star for bravery. After the war, Captain Forbes managed the North Shore Ferry Company before starting his own salvage firm.
