Telemarket shopping proposed
PA Auckland Shopping and banking at home with the use of linked telephone and television will eventually be commonplace, says the Postmaster-gen-eral, Mr Hunt.
In an address to the Direct Marketing Association, he outlined planned technological advances within the Post Office. “Automatic transaction machines, already in popular use, will become widespread,” he said. “As computerised facilities expand, services such as direct debiting of accounts for paying utility bills will become possible.” Although shopping at home would become common, he said, point-of-sale debits would be available for those who preferred to shop in person. Mr Hunt said the Post Office was considering an approach from Television New Zealand to start a telemarketing system, for which the department would provide an answering service for the companies advertising.
