Minister withdraws ferry
PA Invercargill The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, will recommend to the Cabinet that the Stewart Island ferry Wairua be taken off the Foveaux Strait run. In a blunt message to Stewart Islanders, Mr Prebble also said there was no chance of freight rates and fares being reduced in the meantime and that the Government would make a decision on a replacement after receiving public tenders. Mr Prebble said the Wairua had to go as far as he was concerned but this suggestion had still to be put before the Cabinet. He wanted to make his decision clear to the island’s people before he did that. The ferry would probably be taken off the run in August. There would be no reduction of the Wairua’s fares in the meantime.
