Fishermen’s cases missing

Commercial fishermen working .from Akaroa are running into problems because of a desperate shortage of fish cases. The .large plastic containers 1 make excellent clothes baskets, are very popular with yachtsmen, and are ideal for storing tools, says the Christchurch manager of Feron Seafoods, Mr Craig Cusdin. However, at ?20 each they are costly to replace. Mr Cusdin estimates about 1000 of them are serving as things other than fish cases in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. Cases are washed overboard from trawlers or lost in transit between the boats, fish companies, and fish shops. Some, says Mr Cusdin, even turn up at rubbish dumps. “It is amazing where they turn up. People just don’t realise how valuable they are and how important they are to fishermen.” A general amnesty on the cases has been declared. Any left at the Akaroa

wharf will be welcomed with open arms — ho questions asked.
