New West German Ambassador
PA Wellington Dr Horst Becker has been appointed as the Federal Republic of Germany’s new Ambassador to New Zealand. He succeeds Dr Hans Alfred Steger, who returned to Bonn recently after five years in New Zealand. Dr Becker, aged 60, has since 1980 been head of the division for disarmament and armament control in the United Nations and its special organisations at the Federal Foreign Office in
Bonn. He studied law before joining the Foreign Service in 1954. His law studies had been interrupted by war service and internment as a prisoner of war from 1944 to 1945. Dr Becker has served in London, Johannesburg, The Hague, at the permanent mission of the Federal Republic at N.A.T.0., in the political department of the German Foreign Office and as Ambassador to Somalia. He is expected to arrive in New Zealand next month.
