'Defence jobs cost $US10B
NZPA staff correspondent Washington Mr Lawrence Korb. Assistant Secretary for Manpower in the Defence Department, says “pork barrel” defence programmes cost American taxpayers at least SUSIO billion a year. Pork barrel programmes are those initiated by Congressmen to provide jobs and contracts in their home areas. They produce “things we don’t want, things we don’t need, but are in there to protect vested interests,” Mr Korb told a television interviewer.
