N-stance backing steady
PA Wellington Support for the Government’s nuclear-ship policy is steady, according the the latest Heylen-“Eye Witness” poll. The policy of banning nuclear weapons from New Zealand gained 77 per cent approval, up from 73 per cent in February, the poll taken on Saturday, March 23, showed. Those disapproving remained steady at 19 per cent while the “don’t knows” fell from 8 per cent to 5 per cent
The poll showed that 52 per cent approved of the Government policy of refusing port access for nuclearpowered ships, exactly the same as in February. The disapproval rate rose to 41 per cent from February’s 37 per cent Asked to choose between breaking defence ties with the United States and allowing nuclear-capable ships into New Zealand ports, 45 per cent preferred to break ties, 45 per cent to let nuclear-capable ships in and 10 per cent did not know.
