Tax reform

Sir,—Sincere congratulations to “The Press” for an editorial (March 27) which registers approval of at least one policy of our present Labour Government. Following a series of anti-Government editorials on the A.N.Z.U.S. issue, it is refreshing to read that Finance Minister Roger Douglas is commended for adopting a courageous policy of tax reform. The points made by “The Press” in supporting a no-exemp-tions strategy for the goods and services tax should find wide acceptance by the majority of your readers, notwithstanding the predictable opposition by trade union officials. It is, however, somewhat ironic that the same issue of your newspaper in which you commend our Government includes NZPA articles on nuclear weapons (pages 29 and 36) which reduce the credibility of “The Press” to zero in your editorial support for the so-called nuclear umbrella. — Yours, etc.,

R. L. PLUCK. March 27, 1985.
