Parenthood

Sir,—Professor Ney says his unit has treated a significant number of parents who neglect or abuse their children. They (the parents) have benefited greatly from learning why they do it, learning about their children and learning how to interact and communicate with them. He also says “if parents could see themselves as successful parents they would feel

warmer towards their children.” Successful parents don’t just happen. People need to be taught, to be educated how to be successful parents. Parenthood is the most responsible job any of us take on, yet we receive no training for it. Training for parenthood could begin in primary school and continue. It should be as basic as the three Rs and equally, if not more, important. The haunting statistics on child abuse alone show that we have far too many unsuccessful parents, ignorant and uneducated, essentially through no fault of their own.—Yours, etc.,
