Job vacancy bank opens
Christchurch’s new computerised job vacancy bank will eventually also include a register of job seekers. The Christchurch bank was officially opened by the Minister of Employment, Ur Burke, yesterday. The computerised system would give Christchurch job seekers access to vacancies throughout New Zealand by the end of the year, said Mr Burke.
Twenty centres were now linked into the system which recorded job vacancies in computer banks. Ashburton and Beckenham would be added soon, he said.
The job bank will also run at Rangiora, and in Aranui, Papanui, and Riccarton. Before the end of the year another 14 centres, including Dunedin, Invercargill,
Nelson, Blenheim, and Greymouth, would join the job bank network.
The next step was to incorporate most of the remaining functions of the employment centres into a “job-seeker register” system.
This system would computerise details job seekers provided about themselves and enable the Labour Department to improve matching and referral. It would record all referrals made and the results of these. It would also maintain information on various job-creation schemes and training programmes in both the public and private sectors. Statistics collected by employment centres would also be recorded in the job seeker register, said Mr Burke.
