Club breaches act
PA Auckland A working men’s club has breached the Human Rights Act by refusing entry to a woman as an affiliated member. The Human Rights Commission found that the Papakura club discrimi-nated-against an affiliated woman member of the
Otahuhu Club when she visited the club last year.
The woman was refused entry to the clubrooms unless she was signed in as a guest of a male member.
The Otahuhu club also complained to the National Chartered Clubs’ Association after a second woman was “embarrassed” on visiting the Papakura
Since the complaints were laid, the Papakura club has cut ties with other chartered clubs in a bid to keep women out. The national association has withdrawn reciprocal visiting rights from the club. The commission was continuing to pursue the matter with the club, said a spokesman.
