Housing Corp. flooded
The Housing Corporation building in Cathedral Square was closed to the public early on Friday afternoon after water flooding from one of the toilets endangered the electrical circuit in the building. A woman was turning off a tap in one of the women’s toilets when the tap came off. The pressure of flooding water activated the firealarm sensors. Two fire engines, a snorkel, and turntable ladder arrived at the scene, and stood by as the building
was evacuated. The manager of the Housing Corporation in Christchurch, Mr C. J. W. Taylor, said that water cascaded down the stairs. It penetrated the switchboard, and the electricity had to be cut off. The building was closed to the public. The staff were asked to retrieve their personal possessions, and sent home for the afternoon. “We are extremely sorry about the inconvenience this caused the public,” Mr Taylor said.
