Christchurch woman on Pacific affairs council
A Christchurch Polytechnic tutor, Miss Louisa Crawley, was among the members of the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs’ advisory council announced by the Minister, Mr Prebble, on Friday. Miss Crawley has a wide background of work relating to the Pacific Islands. She is national treasurer and immediate past-president of
Pacifica and chairman of the Labour Party’s Pacific Island Council. Her polytechnic work includes organising multi-cul-tural studies for various departments and teaching English and Samoan. She is a former Christchurch City and Canterbury United councillor. Mr Prebble said that the 12-member council had been formed to advise and make recommendations to him about matters involving the social, cultural, or economic life of Pacific Island people in New Zealand. “The Government does not claim that the council represents the Pacific Island communities — a representative council is an impossibility because the
Pacific Island communities are so culturally rich and diverse,” Mr Prebble said. “For this reason the appointments are for one year only so that as many other people as possible will have the opportunity to serve on the council.” Members are: Mrs Fanaura Kingstone, of Tokoroa, Mr Tonga Henry, Dunedin (Cook Island); Mrs Elizabeth McAllister, Auckland (Fijian); Mr John Fuluatau Makavilitogia (Maka), Auckland, Mr Lagi Fatatoa Sipeli, Wellington (Niuean); Miss Crawley, Mrs Agnes Rosa Tuisamoa, Auckland (Samoan); Mr Alepano Hiva Savelio Porirua, Mr Aleki Silao, Rotorua (Tokelauan); Mr Tevita Kilifi Heimuli, Auckland, Mrs Hina Stewart, Auckland (Tongan).
