Teachers’ College may change name

Christchurch Teachers’ College may have its name changed to the Christchurch College of Education.

This would follow a similar change at Auckland Teachers’ College. “College of Education” implied the possibility of a wider range of functions, the principal, Mr lan Stewart, told a meeting of the College Council yesterday. A paper would be put to the council for debate soon, he said.

Auckland Teachers’ College had been reorganised recently to produce an integrated college similar to the Christchurch college, said Mr Stewart after the meeting.

“The new name was chosen to indicate a broader range of functions rather

than just the 1 training of teachers. Christchurch Teachers’ College does the same range of things as are done at Auckland.” The move followed the Australian model, where there were colleges of advanced education, he said. Tertiary grants Trainee teachers completing a concurrent bachelor of education course at the University of Canterbury will now be eligible for bursary assistance for their full study year. ■’his was approved recei.ily by. the University Grants Committee.

In the past, the students had been eligible for a bursary only during the university year, although their work at the teachers’ college continued later in the year.

Mr Stewart said the grant was tremendously important for those students, who were otherwise faced with financial hardship for the rest of the college year.
