Workers to seek council support

The Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union will meet representatives of the Canterbury Trades Council today in an effort to get support for the strike by technical and laboratory staff at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company plant at Papanui. The laboratory workers went on strike on February 18 over a wage claim and other rubber workers went on strike when the company began suspending workers

soon after. The union’s secretary, Mr Roger Brott, said that as much support as possible would be sought from the Trades Council. About 35 rubber workers picketed the factory at one gate for two hours early yesterday. Mr Brott said that it was a “symbolic gesture.” The picket line had not been respected by some workers still at the factory, he said.
