Assistance for international car rally

PA Auckland New Zealand’s international car rally has received a financial shot in the arm with the announcement of a sponsor for this year’s event. The four-day rally, round seven of the world drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships, will be known as the AWA Clarion International Rally. Organisation of the rally is already well under way, but when work started a financial cloud hung over the event. If it had gone ahead without sponsorship it could have been the last time an international rally would have been held here.

The rally’s future is now secure with the support of AWA which has provided the computer results service for the past three years. Dunlop, a minor sponsor in the past, has increased its support and is now a subsidiary sponsor for the 2450 km event, which will include 930 km of high-speed special stages. This year’s rally, which starts in Auckland on June 29, and finishes in the city on July 2, will include 47 stages, seven of them totalling 47km on tarseal. The first leg of 11 stages loops north of Auckland through Wellsford to Maungaturoto and returning via Warkworth.
