Cooney wins diving duel

Nicky Cooney (Waikato) and Susan Stewart (NelsonMarlborough) continued their duel for titles in the women’s open grade when the B.N.Z. national diving championships ended at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. In earlier events each had won a title, but the points margin between them had been small in both instances. Yesterday Cooney prevailed in the women’s tower, finishing 10.5 points ahead of Stewart. Cooney won the championship with 325.15 points which was a new best total, surpassing by 13 the previous best set by Kay Cummings (Otago) three years ago. Stewart also beat the previous best total. A 14-year-old Waikato diver, Shane Mathie, won the open tower title, squeez-

ing out Raymond Vallance (Nelson-Marlborough) who had won both the open springboard championships. Mathie gave a commendable display to finish ahead of two senior divers.
