The Philippines

Sir,—“The only answer to its (communism’s) advances would seem to be a more vigorous drive in the Philippines towards relieving poverty and in giving more attention to human rights.” (“The Press,” March 11.) After your recent intemperate editorials on New Zealand’s nuclear stance, it gives me pleasure to write commending your above quoted comments. We hear so much rubbish spoken about communism always being imposed by the current bogyman of the world, Russia, and little about it growing as a response to people living in manifestly unjust capitalistic situations as in the Philippines. We have an “adopted” son there and if you are not among the tiny elite cushioned by the Marcos regime life is grim. Prostitution and drug-taking are the most important “growth industries” caused by the American bases and 80 per cent of the population is living below the poverty line.—Yours, etc. JILL WILCOX. March 11, 1985.
