Surprise gift for President

NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s peace campaigners have mailed a surprise gift to President Reagan — barbed wire from a fence round the proposed site of United States cruise missiles at Molesworth air base, central England. The sections were sheared from the 11km fence and mailed to Washington in padded bags. One of the campaigners said that with the cuttings was a message telling the President they would continue to send him sections of the fence “in regular instalments” over the coming years. He said breaching the fence with bolt cutters . was just like (running) a hot knife through butter.” The wire was thrown round the air base after troops evicted anti-nuclear protesters camping at the base, due to receive 64 American cruise missiles in 1988.
