Massachusetts

Sir,—The stance of the New Zealand Government and its people to support non-nuclear policies deserves to be applauded, particularly by those of us in the countries which are pressuring you to change such policies. New Zealand’s decision to ban nuclear-powered or potentially nuclear-armed ships is an admirable effort to practise beliefs rather than merely to theorise upon them. More so does New Zealand deserve credit since your decisiveness occurs while political and economic pressures are insinuated by the United States

and Australia. We encourage you to stand firm despite these pressures. Your action has exposed the public, nationally and internationally, to the devastation inherent in nuclear arms and to the wisdom of taking definite steps against them. All Governments, our own particularly, need to be reminded of their responsibility to secure the safety, not the destruction, of all people. — Yours, etc., FRANCES CROWE. Northampton, March 1, 1985.
