Carpet workers accept 7 p.c. interim increase

Christchurch carpet workers have won a 7 per cent across-the-board wage increase as a partial settlement of their wage claims. Christchurch’s three carpet mills, owned by Feltex, U.E.B. Industries, and Christchurch Carpet Yarns, had all agreed to the interim settlement, said the Canterbury spokesman for the Woollen Worker’s Union, Mr David Shenker, yesterday. A strike by carpet workers at the Feltex mill in Riccarton ended on Friday, a day after it began, when the company agreed to negotiate a new indus-

trial agreement, said Mr Shenker. He will meet representatives of both Feltex and U.E.B. Industries this week to negotiate final settlements. The union has sought agreements with individual companies since the carpet workers’ award talks broke down irrevocably two weeks ago. The partial settlement would be backdated to February 25, said Mr Shenker. Last week he said that a wage increase of between 15 and <2O per cent would be accejftable to the union.
