Big increase in use of rubbish skips
The absence of any refuse disposal site in the northwest part of Christchurch seems to have had an effect on the City Council’s suburban rubbish skip 'scheme.
Last week-end the City Council’s skips were placed at four sites in the northwest part of the city. The council’s street works engineer, Mr Bruce Scott, said the Rossall Street and Harris Crescent sites accepted 71 per cent more refuse than in any other year. The other two sites in Westminster Street and Malvern Park handled 46 per cent more. Mr Scott said the volume of rubbish peaked in the middle of Sunday afternoon and some people were asked to return later.
No significant increase in the volume of refuse was
recorded at sites in other parts of the city on previous week-ends. Mr Scott attributed the increase to the absence of a refuse disposal site in the northern part of Christchurch. The council ran the recycling and rubbish disposal scheme twice a year, but this was the first since the Waimairi tip had closed, he said.
Skips will be set up at sites in the north-east part of Christchurch this weekend, but Mr Scott said he did not expect too many problems. Although the Waimairi tip had been closed residents in this area were just as close to the Bexley tip. The stations are manned by voluntary groups and Mr Scott urged patrons to be tolerant.
