Case of brucellosis reported

A case of the disease brucellosis, or undulant fever, was reported to the Health Department in Christchurch last week. Undulant fever occurs in animals, mainly in cattle, according to the Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr M. A. Brieseman. People can get brucellosis from milk they have drunk or through handling animals. He said he was surprised at the Christchurch case because none had been detected in the district for some time. The victim is not a farm worker and might have contracted the disease elsewhere in New Zealand. About one case a year has been detected in Christchurch over the last five years. Last week 13 cases of Campylobacter were reported and six cases of salmonella, which Dr Brieseman described as being above average. Three cases were reported from the same family. Two cases of hepatitis A and one case of hepatitis B were reported.
