Skyhawk lands in Chch crisis

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Skyhawk fighter bomber with two people on board made an emergency landing at Christchurch Airport yesterday afternoon. The aircraft, flown by Flying Officer Mark Tapp, was on a high-level navigation exercise from Ohakea to Hokitika and had begun to descend when the pilot noticed unusual noises and vibrations at the reduced engine power level. He diverted to Christchurch where he made a precautionary approach be-

fore landing without incident about 1 p.m. Emergency services were on stand-by for the landing. The aircraft could have landed at Wigram Air Force base but the runway is shorter and the aircraft was not fitted with a drag chute for landing. A maintenance team from Ohakea will travel to Christchurch as soon as possible to check the aircraft and make any repairs. The Skyhawk was one of those recently bought by the R.N.Z.A.F. from Australia.
