Tribunal taking bigger claims
The Small Claims Tribunal will soon be able to accept cases for claims up to ?1000. The Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, announced late last year that the value of claims dealt with by the tribunal would be increased from $5OO to $lOOO. However, claims for the higher amount could not be accepted by the tribunal until legislation was passed by Parliament. A spokesman from Mr Palmer’s office said yester-
day that the tribunal would be able to accept claims up to $lOOO from later this month. Legislation had been passed by Parliament and had received the Royal Assent. The Justice Department’s head office would be sent a memorandum notifying Small Claims Tribunals of the change and it would come into effect after that. A Press Association report in January mistakenly said that the ’ change had already come into effect.
