Coast-to-Coast track

Sir,—The two reports on the effect of the Coast-to-Coast event (“The Press,” February 2 and 4) do not enhance the reputation of “The Press” or Mr Palmer. “The Press” gave undue space to Mr Palmer’s personal opinions, which are obviously not widely shared. “The Press” failed to mention that 90 per cent of the “track” is a rocky riverbed that was totally unaffected and that the delicate alpine bog is protected by an elevated boardwalk which was undamaged. Mr Palmer is obviously of the extreme conservationist lobby. His prediction of “irreparable damage” did not occur, despite extreme weather. His

vague mention of “overseas research,” without a reference source, smacks of pseudo-scientific bluff. If a small area of bush track requires upgrading to withstand the wear and tear of outdoor enthusiasts, surely this warrants attention so that future generations can enjoy our national heritage.— Yours, etc., D. E. STEWART. February 5, 1985.
