Neutrality

Sir,—ln the autumn of 1938 Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister, returned from visiting Hitler in Munich. As he landed he declared he had secured “peace in our time.” In less than a year we were at war. Now, in 1985, Mr Lange is behaving in a similar ostrich-like manner. He disregards the Russian Pacific fleet, as Chamberlain disregarded Hitler’s forces. He chooses to forget that it was the United States of America which saved New Zealand at the battle of the Coral Sea. As one who fought in neutral and undefended Norway I realise that peace depends on strong defences. Norway was overrun by the Nazis. Russia could take New Zealand much more easily, and we would have no friends to rescue us. The Labour Government was elected not for defence reasons, but for economic ones. It has no mandate to put us at such risk by making the A.N.Z.U.S. agreement unworkable. — Yours, etc., KENNETH GREGORY, Richmond. February 4, 1985.
