‘Blundering out of A.N.Z.U.S.’

Sir,—M. T. Moore’s assertion (January 30) that A.N.Z.U.S. had drawn us into “sordid” wars in Korea and Indo-China needs to be corrected. A moment’s thought shows the farce of believing that the Korean war involving Britain and others could stem from A.N.Z.U.S. A person with M. T. Moore’s interest in current affairs should have known that New Zealand was involved as part of a United Nations force. Vietnam was connected with S.E.A.T.O. rather than A.N.Z.U.S. Our forces in Malaya were part of a Commonwealth force that defeated a communist invasion aimed at Singapore and domination of the Indian Ocean. I consider that the younger generation should know the facts and not be swayed by the orchestrated anti-American propaganda which has been rife since the inception of the campaign for demilitarisation of Harewood. — Yours, etc., M. JOHNSTON. February 6, 1985.
