New ‘Kama Sutra’ pops out of sight

PA Auckland The “Pop Up Kama Sutra” will not be popping up in this country. The Indecent Publications Tribunal has called it a “tawdry publication" and classified it indecent. In a decision just released, the tribunal says, “The publication consists of four pop-up drawings and has two pages of text which bear no relation to the pictures.” The tribunal does not believe the “Kama Sutra” itself is indecent. “Burton’s translations of the ‘Kama Sutra’ and ‘The Perfumed Garden’ are recognised as classic works,” the judgment says.

“What we are asked to consider on this occasion and hive been asked to

consider on earlier occasions are imitations. “They are not the ‘Kama Sutra’ nor do they resemble the ‘Kama Sutra’ in any way. Clearly the purpose is dishonest.” The tribunal said the popup — published by Aidan Ellis publishing, Ltd, England — was imported by Thomas C, Lothian Proprietary, Ltd, as a sample copy, before intended commercial importations.
