The Grand Kremlin Palace, overlooking the Moscow River in the south-west corner of the collection of Soviet Government buildings and former churches that make up the Kremlin. Before the Russian Revolution in 1917, the palace was the Moscow home of the Russian Imperial family. It was built between 1838 and 1849. Halls of a much older palace were incorporated in the building. The principal hall, the Hall of St George, is used for important State occasions and receptions. The first Soviet astronaut, Yuri Gagarin, was decorated there in 1961 with the Gold Star of Hero of the Soviet Union.
