Auckland protest on Waitangi
PA Auckland About 100 people gathered in Aotea Square, Auckland, yesterday to protest against the Waitangi Day celebrations.
A handful of police patrolled the edges of the square during two hours of speeches. A letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, calling on the Government to accept its responsibilities under the Treaty of Waitangi was written on a roll of newsprint and signed by the protesters. In Wellington, a Te Kotahitanga spokesman, Maxine Ngata, said of yesterday’s Waitangi ceremony, “I feel it has been a very Kitive day for Te Kotahiga — the unity that was felt up there, the way that we conducted ourselves with dignity and restraint.”
