Behaviour ‘shameful’
PA Wellington The Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, said that the behaviour of demonstrators at Waitangi, particularly towards the GovernorGeneral, Sir David Beattie, was shameful. It showed that the Labour Government had achieved nothing by pandering to a vocal Left-wing minority, Mr McLay said yesterday. “Obviously these people will not stop their protests until all Waitangi Day celebrations are stopped.
“The activities at Waitangi — which for obvious historic reasons should be the focus of all treaty celebrations — have involved only Maoris and a small number of selected dignataries. All other New Zealanders have effectively been cut out of their national day. These changes were opposed by many Maoris, including Labour’s own Maori members of
Parliament.” “The Labour Government conveniently ignores the fact that the treaty involves all New Zealanders.”
Mr McLay said the next National Government would return to a form of Waitangi ceremony that involved all New Zealanders
