‘Vicious campaign’ alleged
NZPA-Reuter Moscow The Soviet Union said yesterday that Washington had unleashed a “vicious campaign” against New Zealand in response to Wellington’s refusal to grant port facilities to nuclearcapable American ships. The State Department said on Monday that Washington was considering appropriate responses to the New Zealand stand.
The official Soviet news agency, Tass, said that the statement “marked the culmination of a vicious antiNew Zealand campaign which has been mounted by the Reagan Administration of late”.
The State Department acted with “unconcealed irritation,” Tass said.
The agency made no comment on the decision yesterday to cancel a joint United States, New Zealand, and Australian naval exercise planned for MarciL
