Medical research receives $26M
PA Wellington The Medical Research Council has been granted $26,349 million for 1985 to 1987. The Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, said the grant would allow research to be maintained at a similar level to the last three years. “It has not been possible at this time to allocate the additional funds sought by the council for growth. The Government is asking that the methods of funding of medical research be reviewed before a decision to grant additional funds is
made,” he said. A one-off grant to a maximum of $500,000 would also be given to assist the council with the replacement of equipment. The council’s director, Dr Jim Hodge, said the council was grateful for the grants when economic circumstances were difficult. The council could continue with the projects already under way and try hard to move more into the area of socially oriented medical research, he said. The council is engaged in some 150 research projects and 20 to 30 programmes.
