Canty XI performs well

Tim Hannan, son of the well-known rugby referee, Tom, achieved a hat-trick in his 3 for 26 for a Canterbury Invitation XI v. B.W.U. representative XI. With Vaughan Hartland taking 6 for 25 the B.W.U. XI was out for 97 after a 52 run third wicket partnership between Robert Logie (31) and Steven Knight (16) had been well placed at 71 for four at lunch. With an opening stand of 58 the Canterbury XI went through to an easy win. scoring 155 (Jonathan Hearn 64). Buller travelled to Christchurch to play the Canterbury XI on Saturday and a B.W.U. representative XI on Sunday. At Medbury on Saturday there was a draw. Buller batted first and reached 188 off 47 overs. Chris Aldridge top scored with 33 and Greg Nahr and Craig Burke made 25 each. Vaughan Hartland (three for 27, David Culpan 3 for 38 and Tim Hannan 2 for 30 bowled tidily. At stumps Canterbury was 157 for seven with Allan Hickford scoring 50 and David Culpan (26) batting soundly. Nahr helped Buller with 3 for 32. As both teams had lost their

seventh wicket at 149 a draw was decided. Buller went on to Bumside Oval on Sunday to play a rain-affected match against the B.W.U. representative lads. In a 25-over match Buller were convincing winners when Keri Roche 35 and Nahr had an opening stand of 64 for Buller to reach 101 for seven and then dismiss eight B.W.U. batsmen for 43 runs in their 25 overs. Keri Roche four for nine and Michael Douglas two for 10 wrecked the B.W.U. innings. With seven of last year's tournament side available again this year Buller could be a surprise at the South Island primary tournament in January.

In a match at Little River a Canterbury Invitation XI was too strong for Banks Peninsula. Canterbury scored 132 for eight (Brendon Lawton 32 retired, Allan Hickford 36 not out, Tim Hannan 23 not out) then dismissed the Peninsula team for 42 with only Richard Britmeyer 11 and Brian Manton 11 reaching double figures. Vaughan Hartland five for 15 and Tim Hannan five for 25 starred with the ball.

On the last day of the club scene Brendan Castle

took six for eight for Lancaster Park B grade and for Sumner Nathan Jones scored 59 not out, 33 not out and took six for 16 off seven overs. Another good performance for Sumner was K. Beaumont’s 53 not out in the C grade. George Pennington scored 30 for Old Collegians D grade team out of a total of 48. This eight and nine-year-old team did well to keep the older Heathcote boys down to 50 runs in reply. Local primary school cricket will restart with internal club matches on February 2 and competition starting the following Saturday. A meeting for all delegates will be held in the Hagley Sports Centre on January 28 at 8 p.m. A topic for discussion will be the grading of players. All managers of teams are also invited to attend.
