Hurley burly

LUKE HURLEY “Japanese Overdrive” and “Luke Hurley.” Those lucky enough to see “Radio With Pictures” last Sunday, would have caught the Dunedin singer/ songwriter and acoustic guitarist, Luke Hurley, sandwiched somewhere between Peking Man and the mini-documentaries on the state of the play in Auckland and Wellington.

These two tapes literally landed out of the blue on my desk. No such number, no such code. But Hurley’s “Japanese Overdrive” was refreshing on television and it certainly is on tape. In fact, his songs are both exciting and demanding from the problems of hi-

tech on the title song, to the drugs and alcohol on “Analysis,” and “King’s Cross,” off his earlier tape, “Luke Hurley.” Hurley’s advantage is that 20 years ago everyone wanted to be a Bob Dylan or Donovan. He now stands out like a sore thumb for the style of the music he plays. Both tapes have neat blues numbers on it, like “Last Time,” plus humour as on “Gross-ery,” and struggle (“Miracle Cure”). Unfortunately the new tape does not have a track listing:. . .

Those interested in getting the tapes can write to P.O. Box 6329, Dunedin. -NEVIN TOPP.
