Axeman back on active list

PA Whangarei The champion galloper, Axeman, is likely to have his first start since February in the Japan-Air New Zealand Stakes (which he won last year) at Ellerslie on November 24. His part-owner and trainer, Kevin Griffin, said that the big chestnut had come up faster than expected after his injury and he is hoping to start the horse in the event.

Axeman was allowed to run along at three-quarter pace on the beach at Ruakaka yesterday and showed no sign of soreness on pulling up.

It was Axeman’s second gallop since being attended by the Australian, Pat Potter, and he put everything into his work — something he hasn’t done for a while, according to Mr Griffin.

Axeman will also be set for the Air New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie in February.
