NZPA-Reuter London An unemployed cancer victim will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a choir of 350 next month to show his family he is not defeated. John Kavan, aged 60, still recovering at his London home from surgery, will conduct Handel’s “Messiah” at the Central Hall in London on December 1. He hopes that the performance will also raise £ 50,000 ($128,000) for cancer research. Mr Kavan, a former theatrical agent who once conducted an all-black performance of the “Messiah” in Johannesburg, said that he hired the hall at a reduced rate and 20 amateur choirs had offered their unpaid services. Under union rules he has to pay the orchestra £BOOO ($20,500).
