Partial eclipse of the sun
A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible over New Zealand on November 23. , ..........
In Chtistchurch, the eclipse will begin at 10.30 a.m. At its maximum phase at 11.40 . a.m. two-thirds of the sun will be obscured. It will end at 12.56 p.m.
A scientific officer at the Carter Observatory in Wellington, Mr Graham Blow, said that partial eclipses of the sun were visible over New Zealand at least twice a year. The next partial eclipse was due on April 9 next year, and the next total solar eclipse was due in 2023.
Mr Blow warned people not to look straight at the sun because, although obscured, the heat generated would permanently damageeyesight. The eclipse could be watched through an arc welding glass, or through two thicknesses of developed black and white film. Another way to observe the eclipse was to use two pieces of cardboard, with a pinhole in one reflecting the light on to the other.' ‘
