After the floods, a boom in babies

PA Invercargill A “baby boom” in Invercargill may be an unexpected result of January’s floods there. The obstetric unit at Southland Hospital had been busy last month, the ninth since the floods, the chief nurse, Miss R. M. Peek, told members of the Southland Hospital Board yesterday. “One wonders if this is not due to some of the water babies arriving,” she said. When questioned by board members, Miss Peek said nursing staff had expected that a baby boom would occur about this time. The reason? — “People having to vacate their houses quickly and forgetting certain items,” she replied. The supervisor of the obstetric unit, Miss Shirley Andrews, confirmed that the unit had been busier than normal last month. She said 144 mothers gave birth, about 20 more than in previous months. “But the floods cannot account for three sets of twins which were delivered last month,” she said.
