Line wire stolen

Thieves have taken more than five tonnes of singlestrand copper wire, once used as telephone lines, from poles in North Canterbury.

The Bkm of wire taken is valued at about $7OOO. The theft has angered the contractor who successfully tendered to the Post Office for the removal of the lines, in an area around Culverden and Waiau.

Mr George Wilson has offered a $5OO reward for

information leading to the recovery of the wire. The lines became obsolete when the Post Office introduced underground wiring in the area earlier this year.

Mr Wilson said the wire had been taken between mid-September * and last week, when the theft was discovered.

He believes that a pair of long-handled pruning shears were used to cut the wire.

The Rangiora C. 1.8. is investigating.
