Fire pints meals at hall in doubt
Christmas dinners for the disadvantaged are unlikely to be offered at St John’s Anglican Church hall, Hereford Street, this year because of a fire there on Wednesday night. The City Mission has provided Christmas dinners at the hall for about 10 years. A series of deliberately lit fires badly damaged part of the hall on Wednesday night. Two pianos, a television set, and a pool table were destroyed in the blaze. The vicar of St John’s, the Rev. Peter Coughlan, said yesterday that it was unlikely the dinner could
be held at the hall this year. The fire had also affected the day-care programme. “We have to expect this sort of thing, serving the community,” said Mr Coughlan.
Insurance assessors inspected the hall yesterday. Detective Senior-Sergeant Quentin Doig said that the police were following a line of inquiry into the fire, which was noticed after a burglary about 10.40 p.m. Scientists of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research were helping the police.
