Ngaire Lamb, Naudu take top honours

The Southland combination of Mrs Ngaire Lamb and Naudu took top honours in the Wrightson N.M.A. AMS A and B gfade show jumping event at the Canterbury A. and P. show. Naudu, probably the most experienced horse on the New Zealand circuit, was the first one to jump clear in the opening round, and the only one of four to record a faultless round over a shortened course in the jump-off. Mrs Lamb’s other rivals in the jump-off were her fellow Southlander, Mal-

colm McCall, on Monata; Julie Srhoy (Ashburton), and Samuel, the winning horse in Wednesday’s power and speed event; and Brian Costello with Merry Orbit, from Waikari.

Mrs Lamb, first to ride, set a standard the others simply could not match, Naudu’s round was an ex-

ample of calculated jumping, although he caused his rider to lose a stirrup iron for a time. Costello, the next to go, had his hopes of a win dashed when Merry Orbit brought a rail down in the second fence, so he took his time over the rest of the course and completed it without incident. McCall too met his Waterloo at the second fence, but unlike Costello, he collected four more faults when a rail was knocked down in the second element of the treble. That left Miss Srhoy and Samuel with the one chance of forcing another jump-off, but Samuel, for once, made a mistake at the first jump, and the victory was Mrs Lamb’s.

Samuel’s tim'e was still good enough to put him in second place, ahead of Costello, with McCall fourth.
