Goats impress judge
The judge of the dairy goats, Mr Ray Messervy, of Amberley, was impressed with the standard of entries. The quality was at least as good if not better than the recent Hawke’s Bay A. and P. show where he was also judge. The competition included representatives from the four dairy breeds in New Zealand — Toggenburg, Saanen, Anglo Nubian and British Alpine. The champion doe, Wairere Saphire, a Saanen, had tremendous dairy character and an impressive mammary system that was holding up very well, said Mr Messervy. The doe, exhibited by James and Barbara Simpson, Southbridge, -also wdn the Stewart Dawson
Cup for the best goat in the show.
The Simpsons also carried off the champion buck award with Southbridge Clyde, a Saanen.
The reserve champion buck, a Toggenburg called Ivyhall Carlos shown by Halliday and Eastwood, Saltwater Creek, was a young animal with great dairy character, said Mr Messervy. The buck was of good breed type, had tremendous bone structure and was judged the best Toggenburg in the show. A British Alpine doe, Strontian Hope, owned by Mrs Lorraine Youngman, West Melton, was junior champion doe. It showeclall the true qualities of ’the
breed and was a graceful animal.
The champion associated recorded doe, a Saanen, shown by Fran and Dave Goulden, Rolleston, also took the best udder award. The goat, Glendon Snowdrop, had a good mammary system and was a powerful dairy type. Mr Messervy, who is president of the Canterbury Goat Breeders’ Association and one of six committee members of the New Zealand association, won the Stewart Dawson Cup for the best goat at last year’s show. With his wife, Gail, he milks 30 goats at Amberley, specialising in British Alpines and Saanen, although they do farm the other two breeds also.
