Filly foal for Light Fingers

PA Auckland Nineteen years ago a mare named Light Fingers grabbed a last-stride win in the Melbourne Cup. Now aged 23, Light Fingers has just given birth to a filly by a Cambridge stallion, Prince’s Gate. The filly was bred by Mrs Molly Dawson, of Pirongia, whose husband, the late Mr Fred Dawson, bred Light Fingers.

Light Fingers has had an unlucky stud career. Two of her offspring had

to be destroyed at birth or shortly after and she failed to conceive in no fewer than seven seasons. Light Fingers carried Bst 41b in her Melbourne Cup success, still a record weight for a winning mare. She was trained by? Bart Cummings and was his first Melbourne Cup winner. In 1966 she finished second in the Cup to a stablemate, Galilee. She then carried 9st 11b. Light Fingers has now been retired from stud duty.
